Coincidentally, one of Manteca's previous members has just stepped out with his first set under his own name. Tenor saxophonist Kirk MacDonald plays to the deep strengths of his instrument on The Revellers, regarding tradition without becoming traditions slave. Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson are helpful reference points, but the outstanding moment on a handsome and generously programmed CD is MacDonalds triumph with every tenorist's challenge, Body and Soul, played here confidently in mid tempo. Trumpeter Sam Noto is an exciting foil, his sudden yelps and high register explorations working to greatest effect in the long, closing study of But Not For Me.
