Kirk MacDonald Takes First Place in 4th International Jazz Soloist Competition!

The "4ème Concours International de Soliste de Jazz" was held in the Principality of Monaco on June 3rd, 2002. The competition is sponsored by the Prince Rainer III Académie de Musique. This year's competition received sixty applicants from eighteen countries. Three semi-finalists were chosen by a jury and invited to the final phase of the competition which is a public concert performance in Monte Carlo, Monaco accompanied by a rhythm section.

This year's performances had a jury consisting of nine judges drawn from the Académie of Musique faculty along with professional musicians from the area. The competition winners also received a cash prize, with the 1st place winner being invited back to sit on the jury panel at the following year's competition.

1st Place - Kirk MacDonald - saxophone (Toronto, Canada)

2nd Place - Tigran Martikyan - piano (New York, U.S.A.)

3rd Place - Antonio Tosques - guitar (Foggia, Italy)

A new quartet recording under the Justin Time label. Called "Pure and Simple" it features pianist John Taylor, bassist Neil Swainson and drummer Terry Clarke.

"Tenor saxophonist Kirk MacDonald may have recorded his finest session yet. The music was conceived with all of the players in mind and that may explain the ease at which pianist John Taylor, bassist Neil Swainson and drummer Terry Clarke are able to transverse the often complex compositional territory. As always, MacDonald's tone is clear and his solos are very focused. Another excellent outing." The Jazz Report Magazine
