The Revellers

...Kirk MacDonald offers...pleasures on his debut album. Much of the considerable fun comes from MacDonald's in choice of Sam Noto, the veteran American trumpeter, to share the quintet's front line.

The two make an oddly appropriate pair, MacDonald laconic and mild, Noto a boisterous class clown. A crack Toronto rhythm section anchored by gritty pianist Mark Eisenman, puts the horns at ease. It's a measure of MacDonald's inventiveness that he manages to find new things to say with war-horses like Embraceable You and Body and Soul, where he best combines his Cartesian harmonic rigor and his casual delivery that are the marks of his style.
